samtosha anuttamah sukha labha
"Through contentment, ultimate joy and comfort is attained."
- Patanjali Yoga Sutras 2.42
This extended yoga practice will combine mindful slow flow vinyasa, pranayama (breathwork), and guided deep relaxation to encourage us to listen to and live from the heart. Through a physical focus on spinal and shoulder mobility, we will explore backbends and twists to open our central channel and encourage the free-flow of energy through the heart, as well as forward folds to soothe, nourish and protect the heart when needed.
Samtosha (contentment) is one of the traditional Niyamas (recommended behaviours) in yoga. Through our practice, we challenge ourselves to feel comfortable outside our comfort zone, to know ourselves more deeply, so that we can be more open to change, accepting of impermanence, and therefore more powerful and decisive out in the world. In yoga, we seek to expand our window of tolerance so we can better receive, process and integrate our life experiences from a place of deep inner calm and acceptance. In Samtosha, there is no fear, only compassion and gratitude.
This sukha (happiness/comfort) is not to bypass or ignore our inner truth, but to be radically present to the reality of each moment, to recognize our emotions as they arise, allowing us to live more responsive and less reactionary lives off the mat.
This class assumes some previous yoga experience, and a desire to inner-journey into the heart of yoga practice.
